Torminal
FAQ

Questions, answered

If something's still unclear, the rest is in the app — and it's free to try.

Is Torminal really free?

Completely. No paid tier, no accounts, no trials. It stays alive on Monero donations from people who find it useful.

Can you see my passwords or keys?

No. Your vault is encrypted and decrypted entirely on your machine. Nothing is uploaded — there is no server to upload it to.

How does routing over Tor work?

Toggle Tor per-server or globally. Torminal builds a circuit and sends the whole connection — including DNS resolution — through it, so even .onion hosts work and your real address never leaks.

What if I lose my security key?

Your password is always kept as a recovery slot, so a lost FIDO2 key never locks you out. You can enroll a replacement afterwards.

Which platforms are supported?

Windows, macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel) and Linux, with native builds for each.

How is it different from PuTTY or Termius?

One app for SSH, SFTP and RDP, with a cipher-cascade vault and first-class Tor routing built in — not bolted on. And it costs nothing.

Why does my antivirus or Windows flag Torminal?

Because the app isn't code-signed yet. SmartScreen and some antivirus engines distrust any unsigned installer and may show an “unknown publisher” warning or a false virus alert. There's nothing wrong with the build — it's produced in the open by CI from a tagged commit. We'll buy a code-signing certificate as soon as donations cover it, which removes the warnings.
